At least six people have been injured in a mass shooting at Florida State University.

At least six people were injured in a mass shooting at Florida State University on Thursday, according to hospital officials who confirmed to CNN that they were treating victims from the campus.

All six individuals sustained gunshot wounds, a spokesperson for Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare reported. One victim is in critical condition, while the remaining five are in serious condition.

Law enforcement sources with direct knowledge of the incident confirmed that a suspect is currently in custody.

The full extent of the injuries remains unclear, according to law enforcement sources citing early reports.

FSU Alert, the university’s emergency notification system, issued a warning about an “active shooter” near the Student Union shortly after noon on Thursday.

“Police are on scene or en route,” the alert posted on X stated. “Continue to seek shelter and await further instructions. Lock and stay away from all doors and windows, and be prepared to take additional protective measures.”

CNN has reached out to the Tallahassee Police Department, the Leon County Sheriff’s Office, and Florida State University for more information. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement confirmed that it is “actively engaged in the incident on FSU’s campus.”

Students led out with their hands raised

Florida State University student Emily Palmer, 21, was near the student union when she received an alert about a “dangerous situation” on campus.

“I’m shaking… there’s just a lot going on,” Palmer told CNN from the safety of her student housing.
“I’m worried about my friends,” she added. “Some of them are in class right now and being evacuated by police with their hands up.”

Meanwhile, 20-year-old junior Joshua Sirmans was in the university’s main library when alarms began sounding, warning of an active shooter, according to the Associated Press. He said law enforcement officers led him and other students out of the building with their hands raised.

FSU Alert continued to issue warnings, urging people to shelter in place. One message read, “Law enforcement is actively clearing rooms on the main campus.”

Richard Rind, FSU’s director of transportation and parking, told CNN he was also sheltering in place as emergency vehicles flooded the area.

“There are many emergency vehicles on scene, but we can’t see much since we’re locked down in a building across the street,” Richard Rind told CNN. He added that he heard gunshots and saw people running as the situation unfolded Thursday afternoon.

Governor Ron DeSantis expressed his support for the university in a post on X, writing, “Our prayers are with our FSU family, and state law enforcement is actively responding.”

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier also shared that his office is involved in the response effort on FSU’s campus.
