Fan Remains in Critical Condition After Fall at PNC Park During Pirates-Cubs Game

A fan who fell from the right field wall onto the field during Wednesday night’s game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago Cubs remains in critical condition, according to a statement from Pittsburgh Public Safety on Thursday.

Authorities are treating the fall as accidental. “This incident is being treated as accidental in nature. The patient remains in critical condition at the hospital,” the department shared on X (formerly Twitter). Police added that they do not expect to release further updates at this time.

The incident occurred during the seventh inning of the game. Play was halted while medical personnel rushed to assist the fan, who was eventually carted off the field.

The Pirates organization issued a statement Thursday, noting that any further updates would come from medical personnel and the fan's family.

“We are all deeply saddened and truly heartbroken after the terrible accident that occurred last night,” said Pirates chairman Bob Nutting. “It was one of the most difficult moments many of us have ever experienced. We are devastated. Pirates baseball is a community, and our fans are like family. In times like these, we must come together, support one another, and keep him and his loved ones in our prayers. We also want to thank and appreciate the efforts of the first responders who rushed to his attention and provided him with compassionate care.”

Pittsburgh Public Safety confirmed the man was transported to Allegheny General Hospital in critical condition. “Pittsburgh EMS, as well as the Pirates and Cubs athletic training teams and other PNC Park personnel reacted and responded immediately and administered care,” the Pirates added in a statement Wednesday night.

The fall occurred shortly after Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run double to give Pittsburgh a 4-3 lead. Players quickly noticed the incident and signaled for medical assistance.

Visibly shaken, players from both teams were seen kneeling and holding their heads in concern.

Pirates manager Derek Shelton offered his thoughts after the game. “I just want to offer thoughts and prayers for the incident that happened earlier. I thank both our medical staff, the Cubs medical staff, EMS—everyone who responded so quickly. Please keep him in your prayers,” Shelton said.

“Even though it’s 350 feet away, or whatever it is, the way it happened—he laid motionless while the play was still going. Craig [Counsell] and I both saw it and got out there. I don’t think the umpire saw it because of how the ball kicked. It’s extremely unfortunate. That’s an understatement.”....Load More
