2 Dead, Suspect in Custody Following Shooting at Florida State University: Report

Two people are dead and a suspect is in custody following a shooting on the campus of Florida State University in Tallahassee on Thursday, April 17.

The university issued an alert on social media shortly after noon, reporting an active shooter near the student union and urging those nearby to take shelter.

“An active shooter has been reported in the area of Student Union,” read a post on X just after 12 p.m. “Lock and stay away from all doors and windows and be prepared to take additional protective measures.”

A spokesperson for the Tallahassee Police Department confirmed to PEOPLE that a suspect had been apprehended. According to CNN, the individual was found carrying a handgun, while a shotgun was discovered inside the student union building. Authorities also located another firearm in the suspect's vehicle.

The Florida State University Police Department is leading the investigation, according to the Leon County Sheriff's Department, as reported by PEOPLE. CNN confirmed Thursday afternoon that two people were killed in the shooting, while several others sustained critical or serious injuries, per reports from both CNN and the Tallahassee Democrat.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced on X that his office is also investigating the incident.

FSU announced just before 2 p.m. that all classes scheduled for April 17 had been canceled. Additionally, all home athletic events are suspended through Sunday, April 20.

This is not the first time FSU has experienced gun violence. In 2014, a gunman opened fire in the university library, injuring three students before being fatally shot by police.
